Justin Bender, LPC Justin Bender is a License Professional Counselor, with an extensive array of therapeutic approaches treating children, adolescents, and adults. Justin has a clinical infrastructure that is paramount in treating the diverse populations APS serves. Justin specializes in “Family Therapy” and “Behavioral Management”, targeting teens, adolescents, and children with special needs, thus encompassing as many family support systems needed to execute successful treatment. Justin also facilitates group sessions targeting “Child Parenting”. Lisa M. Boster, LMFT Lisa M. Boster is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Houghton College, Houghton, NY in 1995, and her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Counseling from University of Mobile, Mobile, AL in 1997. Lisa has ten years of experience working in both the mental health and substance abuse fields. Lisa's particular areas of interest include family and couples therapy as well as working with children and adolescents. She joined Alabama Psychiatric Services in January, 2009. Amy Daniels, LPC Amy Daniels is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). She provides outpatient counseling for couples, adults, adult groups, families, adolescents and children. She received her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at Georgia School of Professional Psychology in 1998. Amy utilizes cognitive behavioral and interpersonal psychodynamic techniques to guide patients towards their objectives. Amy has worked with Singing River Services as an adult therapist as well as the Lucedale, Mississippi court system providing counseling for adults with substance abuse and dependency problems, and counseling individuals found guilty of domestic violence. Also, Amy has worked as a therapist on an acute care unit and a residential program for children and adolescents. Michelle Edwards, LPC Michelle Edwards is a Licensed Professional Counselor, who joined Alabama Psychiatric Services in September of 2005. Michelle received her bachelor in Psychology from Fairfield University in Fairfield, Connecticut, a Master in Counseling at the University of South Alabama, and she obtained her LPC in 2004. She has previously worked in the intensive outpatient program at Alabama Psychiatric Services and has also worked at several health care facilities in the Mobile area, primarily specializing in the treatment of addictions with adolescents and adults. Stephanie Garrard, LCSW Stephanie Garrard is a Licensed Certified Social Worker with extensive experience in the facilitation of individual, couples and group therapy. She currently facilitates an outpatient Eating Disorder group as well as a Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) skills training group focusing on the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorders. Stephanie maintains active membership in the National Association of Social Workers. Chrissy Holmes, LCSW Chrissy Holmes, LCSW, graduated from Troy University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Work and the University of Alabama in 1999 with a Master in Social Work. While completing her studies, Chrissy interned with various agencies including Department of Youth Services, Mt. Meigs, Vance Elementary School, and UAB Medical Social Services Department. Before moving to Montgomery in 2006, she worked at the Presbyterian Home for Children. Chrissy worked primarily with emotionally conflicted adolescent females. She also served as the lead therapist for the Assessment Center which assisted with placement of children within different facilities based on their various needs. Chrissy's other experience includes working at Children’s Hospital as a medical social worker for the Burn Unit and the Stem Cell Transplant Unit, and as a therapist/social worker at Meadhaven Psychiatric Unit. She uses primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy but that may vary based on the patient’s individual needs. Chrissy joined APS in 2007. Dawn Dove Lucas, LPC Dawn Dove Lucas is a Licensed Professional Counselor with extensive training in marriage and family counseling. She received her master’s degree from the University of Mobile. She has worked extensively with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and parents for the past twenty years. The American Psychotherapy Association (APA) is nominating her to become a Board Certified Professional Counselor Brenda, Naftel, LPC Brenda Naftel is a Licensed Professional Counselor who completed her undergraduate and graduate programs in Montgomery, Alabama at Auburn University Montgomery. She holds a Master's degree in Education, Community Counseling and Education. She is a member of the Alabama Counseling Association in which she serves on the executive board of Chapter VIII. She is also a member of the Alabama Association of Specialists in Group Work and the Alabama section of Mental Health. Her experience is in the treatment of dually diagnosed individuals, substance addiction, adolescents with mental illness and behavioral problems, and domestic violence work with perpetrators and victims. She loves her work as a therapist and working with all populations and especially enjoys group work. Lee Nowlin, LCSW Lee Nowlin is a Licensed Certified Social Worker with extensive experience in the treatment of addictions and co-occurring illnesses. Lee is currently the Program Coordinator for the Partial Hospital/Intensive Outpatient Programs in the Alabama Psychiatric Services Mobile office. She is also the primary therapist for the Chemical Dependency Partial Hospitalization Program. Lee graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Social Work from Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois in 1988. She received her Master of Social Work from The George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri in 1990. Jeffrey Pappas, LCSW Jeffrey Pappas is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 25 years of private practice experience. Jeff received his bachelor's degree from Amherst College in 1977, and his Master in Social Work from the University of Alabama in 1982. His areas of interest include depression, anxiety disorders, dissociative disorders, post traumatic stress disorder, phobias, and couple and family therapy. Jeff joined Alabama Psychiatric Services in October 2008 and works with adults, adolesence, and children.
Julius M. "Jay" Ritchie, LPC Julius M. "Jay" Ritchie is a Licensed Professional Counselor who specializes in the treatment of adults with multiple mental illness issues. He joined the Alabama Psychiatric Services practice in May 2002 as a therapist in the Mobile Partial Hospitalization Program. Jay received his M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Montevallo in December 1993, completed a clinical internship at the University of South Alabama in September 1998, and earned his LPC licensure in April 2002.
Jay has worked extensively during his career with patients of all ages, including children and teachers in the Hoover City School System, adults and children (and their families) at Charter Behavioral Health System of Mobile, and troubled teens with the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama. Jay's particular areas of interest include cognitive learning processes, organizational and life management skills, and helping patients to end their lifelong, unresolved issues. He has solid experience in cognitive therapies and currently serves his clinical population as a group psychotherapist. Jay values patient experience in the recovery process, and focuses on providing therapy primarily through cognitive-behavioral approaches. Emily S. Smith, Ph.D., LPC, CEAP, NCC Emily is a Licensed Professional Counselor who earned the Masters, Educational Specialist, and Ph.D. degrees in School Psychology from The University of Alabama. She has experience as a school psychologist as well as experience in an employee assistance setting. She was awarded the Hal Davidson Professional of the Year Award by the Alabama Chapter of EAPA in 2008. Emily works with individuals with a variety of presenting issues across age groups, including parent-child issues, parent training, anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, marital and other relationship issues, stress, anger, and work-related concerns. In her work with employee assistance, she has years of experience in workshop and seminar presentations as well as group/team/unit interventions.
Connie Ann Fleming, LPC Connie Vais is a Licensed Professional Counselor with 20 years experience in the treatment of adolescents and their families. Connie graduated from Troy State University in Troy, Alabama with a Master of Science in Counseling. Presently, Connie is the primary therapist for the Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program in Mobile.
